Moving a Sofa Down Apartment Stairs with Protective Wrapping

For a recent one-bedroom apartment move, our team wrapped a sofa before carrying it downstairs. The photo shows the sofa protected with wrapping as the crew moved it carefully through the stairwell. A single large piece can need thoughtful handling when an apartment exit has halls, turns and stairs.
Why wrap a sofa before carrying it downstairs?
Moving a sofa through apartment hallways, doorways and stair landings can expose upholstery and corners to scuffs. Protective wrapping helps keep the sofa covered during handling. Wrapping is only one part of a stair carry: the team also needs to understand the sofa’s shape, the route and the space available at turns and landings.
Plan the apartment stair carry
Before moving day, note which floor the apartment is on, whether there is an elevator, and where the tightest doorway or stair turn is. Share the sofa’s approximate dimensions and a photo if available. This gives the moving team useful context to review the route and preparation before the carry begins.
One-bedroom apartment moving checklist
- Tell your movers the floor number and whether the building has an elevator or stairs.
- Share the sofa’s approximate size and mention narrow doors, tight turns or small landings.
- Confirm parking, building access and any move-in or move-out time window.
- Clear a safe path where possible and point out items that need special care.
Can every sofa be carried down apartment stairs?
It depends on the sofa’s size and shape and the available route. Some pieces have removable legs or sections, but designs vary. Tell your movers what can be removed and share any access concerns so the team can assess the move with you.
