Moving within West Kootenay may not be a cross-country relocation, but that does not mean you should treat it like a quick furniture pickup.
A move between Castlegar, Nelson and Trail still needs planning.
The good news is that a little preparation can make the day much easier.
Start with the route
When requesting a quote, tell the moving company exactly where the move begins and ends.
For example:
Castlegar → Nelson
Nelson → Trail
Trail → Castlegar
Also mention if there are additional pickup or drop-off locations.
Explain what type of property you are leaving
A one-bedroom apartment is different from a full house.
Tell your mover whether you are moving from:
- apartment
- condo
- townhouse
- detached home
- office
- commercial space
This helps the mover understand the likely amount of furniture and the type of access involved.
Mention stairs before moving day
Stairs can make a significant difference.
That includes:
- apartment stairs
- basement stairs
- narrow interior staircases
- exterior steps
If there is an elevator, mention that as well.
Do not forget parking and access
The truck needs somewhere practical to load and unload.
If your building or property has limited access, let the mover know beforehand.
That can include:
- narrow driveway
- underground parking
- loading zone
- restricted parking
- long walk from parking to the door
Separate what is moving from what is leaving
One advantage of using a company that handles both moving and junk removal is that you may be able to deal with unwanted items during the same general transition.
Before moving day, separate:
KEEP / MOVE
from:
REMOVE / DISCARD
That makes the job much clearer.
Small move? Still explain the details
Not every move is a full house.
You may only need help with:
- one room
- a couch
- a bedroom set
- a few large pieces
- an apartment
- a marketplace purchase
Small moves still benefit from clear information.
Moving in winter or poor weather
West Kootenay conditions can change quickly.
Before moving day:
- keep walkways accessible
- clear unnecessary obstacles
- protect entryways where possible
- have essential items packed separately
- allow extra time when conditions are poor
Pack important personal items separately
Some things are better kept with you.
Examples:
- identification
- medication
- keys
- wallet
- phone charger
- important documents
- jewellery
- small valuables
Keep them in a clearly marked personal bag or box.
Label boxes by room
Simple labels save time.
Instead of writing only:
Kitchen stuff
try:
Kitchen – dishes
or:
Bedroom – clothing
That makes unloading much easier.
Tell the mover about heavy items
If you have unusually heavy or difficult items, mention them before moving day.
Photos can help.
