Trail, the Leaves Have a Pickup Date. What About the Sofa?

See Trail’s 2026 fall yard-waste schedule, what the city accepts, and how to plan separate furniture removal or a garage clear-out before winter.

Garage with stored boxes, bins and household items.

The leaves are bagged. The branches are gathered. And that old sofa is still occupying the garage space you wanted back before winter.

A fall cleanup can start in the garden and end with a much bigger question: where does everything else go?

For Trail households, there’s a useful distinction to make before putting anything outside.

Garden cleanup has its own calendar

Trail’s 2026 fall yard and garden waste collection begins October 26 in Glenmerry and Waneta, with neighbourhood collections continuing through November 10. Crews make one pass through each area, and materials must be ready by 7 a.m. on the first scheduled day.

This collection is for eligible yard and garden waste. Furniture and general household clutter need a separate plan. Check your neighbourhood’s dates, preparation instructions and quantity limits in the City of Trail’s official fall collection notice.

Give the garage a job again

Perhaps yours is supposed to hold a car. Or a workbench. Or simply provide a clear path to the winter gear.

Instead of starting with “clean everything,” choose one useful result: make enough room to use the space again.

Then sort the items standing in the way:

  • Keeping: belongings that need a proper place indoors.
  • Passing on: usable furniture with a confirmed buyer or recipient.
  • Removing: unwanted items you want assessed for collection.

Keep garden waste separate from household items. A mixed pile makes it harder to explain what needs moving, what needs hauling and what is staying.

The awkward item deserves the first decision

Boxes are easy to put off. A sofa at the bottom of the stairs can hold up the whole job.

Before arranging removal, take a photo of the item and the route out. Include narrow doorways, stairs, tight corners and the distance to vehicle access. Mention whether someone must coordinate building access.

You don’t need to drag a heavy item outside just to ask for an estimate.

If you’re replacing furniture, think through both halves of the change: where the old piece is going and how the replacement will arrive. Ask about pickup, delivery and removal together so the requirements are clear before anything is scheduled.
